Kids’ rooms get a modish makeover thanks to My Mini Abode X Matt Blatt

Here at Matt Blatt we’re firm believers in tailoring grown-up style to create cool kids’ spaces – we’re not big fans of predictable places – and neither is interior stylist and founder of My Mini Abode Maria Angus – Maria@myminiabode – who recently styled three swish zones for youngster in our Adelaide showroom….and here’s the super cool and not-too-cutesy result…

A novel nursery

Maria planned the room around the Claudio Francesco Bellini Bay Rocking Chair, perfect for midnight feeding and fussing, and then built the rest of the room around it, selecting neutral shades for the key pieces and using texture and colourful accessories to add a pinch of pizazz perfect for pint-sized people.

Maria advised updating accessories over time to take the room from a baby’s boudoir to a schmick space for toddlers and tweens – and the ages in between.

“Change up the rug and the ottoman and you have a whole new look…that’s the benefit of keeping your furniture pieces neutral, you can change the look as the years, and tastes, change,” she said.

The Bronx Cabinet does double duty as both sleek storage and a chic change table, with Maria suggesting swapping the change mat for a makeshift bookshelf or toy shelf once the nappy days are done and dusted (but who’s counting?)

Here’s Maria’s product picks if you want to shop the look…

Built for a boy

Feeling that boys are often a little left out when it comes to kids’ fashion and interiors, Maria was keen to create a special space inspired by her six-year-old son, introducing a sense of fun and adventure via quirky cushions, prints and accessories – and including a tonne of storage for all their boyish bits and bobs.

“I was really surprised by the furniture options for kids at Matt Blatt,” said Maria, who used the Replica Anna Ferreiri Castelli Componibili as an alternative to the traditional bedside table and chose the hamburger wall-mounted night light and shark storage basket for both their functionality – and personality.

A place to play…and a playful place

Bearing in mind the fact a playroom needs to be both practical and playful, Maria chose plenty of storage, a designated table to keep crafting off the floor, a roomy shelf for both books and toys and plenty of faux plants to bring the outdoors in – minus any messy soil or watering in the hands of over-enthusiastic mini-gardeners.

“I love how the yellow stool ties in with the rug…which is essential for Lego and train-track building, while the stools and chairs mean Mum and Dad can hang out here too.”
